This run of 1x8 Red Pine has been affect by a fungus that creates a blue discoloration. The fungus can occur during the summer months when our freshly sawn boards are exposed to the open air before kiln drying. The color ranges from a striking blue to a dull gray or black. The fungus that creates the stain is non-destructive and has little or no effect on the structural integrity of the wood, so it is safe to use in terms of strength.
This run of pine is recognized as the Hippie Stain to pay homage to a specific part of our area's history. In the mid 1960s, "hippie communes" dotted the hills around the southern and eastern edges of Algonquin Park as people in the back-to-the-land movement discovered the area had lots of cheap land to get back to. The hardscrabble farms homesteaded by the Madawaska and Bonnechere Valleys' Polish and Irish settlers were being sold off at low prices as their descendants moved to town. This blue stain pattern, with it's psychedelic look, is perfect for the non-conformists, artists, or stylish folks who share the same traits as the original Algonquin Hippies.
Please note that the actual width of the 1x8 face is 7 1/4 inches. Pieces are 3/4" thick. Murray Bros. recommends order 10% above your required footage to account for waste material.
